Putting lasers into live cells — Tiny lasers act as barcodes for cells

In our latest work, just published in Nano Letters we have turned living cells into self-sustained tiny lasers. By ingesting a whispering gallery mode resonator – basically a micrometre-sized coloured plastic bead – our cells gain the capability to produce green laser light. The spectral composition of the laser light generated by each bead is different … Read more

GatherLab to co-organize symposium at MRS Spring 2016

Malte Gather is co-chairing a symposium at the MRS Spring Meeting 2016. Symposium EP1 will cover the latest developments in “Organic Excitonic Systems and Devices”. This covers a broad range of important researach topics, ranging from Exciton dynamics and management to bioinspired and bioderived organic light sources.

ERC Starting Grant ABLASE started

The GatherLab has received funding from a Starting Grant by the European Research Council. The project “ABLASE – Advanced Bioderived and Biocompatible Lasers” starts this month and will enable the lab to push further the limits of laser emission from and within biological materials. Further information is available on the school and university websites.

Caroline Murawski joins Gather Lab

As of May 2015, Caroline Murawski has joined the Gather Lab to work on several aspects of small molecule organic semiconductors. Caroline is jointly supervised by Prof Ifor Samuel and by Malte. Welcome!

MRS Spring Meeting

Giving an invited talk at the MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco, Malte presented results from the recent Nature Communications on emission and lasing in solid-state green fluorescent protein. (MRS Spring, Nature Communications).

Wiki on Organic Electronics created by students of Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes

During the last of four workshops run by Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, the students attending have created a Wiki on the main ideas of Organic Electronics. The website is available at http://de.organische-elektronik-ag-3.wikia.com and introduces the main concept of organic devices, including organic LEDs, organic photovoltaics and organic field effect transistors. The workshops were organized by … Read more
